It’s Never Too Late: New Study Shows Women in Their 80s and 90s Still Gain Strength

If you’ve ever thought “I’m too old to start,” a new study just made that excuse a lot harder to justify. Researchers followed women over the age of 85 — some well into their 90s — through a 24-week supervised exercise program, and the results were clear: advanced age is not a barrier to real, measurable improvement.
What the Study Actually Did
This wasn’t an intense program. Participants were split into groups doing either light aerobic work (treadmill walking, gradually increasing in intensity) or simple resistance training — dumbbells and bodyweight movements like squats, presses, and curls, starting at a genuinely low intensity and progressing slowly over the 24 weeks. Every session was professionally supervised, three times a week.
What They Gained
Both groups showed significant improvement in something that matters enormously for daily independence: the ability to sit and stand from a chair without help. The group doing resistance training also saw marked gains in grip strength — a key marker doctors use to track overall health and independence in older adults — along with favorable changes in metabolic health markers.
The researchers’ conclusion says it best: advanced chronological age is not a barrier to meaningful adaptation, as long as the program is designed appropriately and properly supervised.
Why This Matters Beyond the Numbers
Sit-to-stand ability and grip strength aren’t abstract fitness metrics — they’re the difference between needing help and not needing it. Getting out of a chair, opening a jar, carrying a bag of groceries. This study is a reminder that the body keeps responding to consistent, appropriately-dosed movement, no matter what decade you’re in.
What This Looks Like Here
This is exactly why our senior programs and complimentary personal training exist — a properly supervised starting point, built around where you actually are today, not where you assume you “should” be. You don’t need to already be strong to start. You just need to start.
It’s Not Too Late
Whether you’re 45 or 95, the message from this research is the same: your body can still adapt. That’s the whole idea behind “your goals, your pace, your victory.”
